Factors Associated with Jealousy over Real and Imagined Infidelity: an Examination of the Social-cognitive and Evolutionary Psychology Perspectives
نویسنده
چکیده
Three hundred fifty-eight undergraduates completed anonymous questionnaires regarding jealousy over a mate s infidelity. More men than women predicted that sexual infidelity would be worse than emotional infidelity when given the forcedchoice hypothetical measures used in previous work. When some of the implications of hypothetical infidelity were controlled, the gender difference disappeared. One hundred twenty-seven participants reported having actual experience with a mate's infidelity. The two genders did not differ in degree of focus on the sexual versus emotional aspects of a mate's real betrayal. Sexual jealousy was correlated with having a greater number of sexual relationships and, for men but not women, with placing higher importance on sex in dating relationships. The results are discussed from a socialcognitive perspective.

Reconsidering evolved sex differences in jealousy: comment on Harris (2003).
In a recent article, Harris (2003) concluded that the data do not support the existence of evolved sex differences in jealousy. Harris' review correctly identifies fatal flaws in three lines of evidence (spousal abuse, homicide, morbid jealousy), but her criticism of two other lines of evidence (self-report responses, psychophysiological measures) is based, in part, on a mischaracterization of ...
متن کاملPsychophysiological responses to imagined infidelity: the specific innate modular view of jealousy reconsidered.
Three studies measured psychophysiological reactivity (heart rate, blood pressure, and electrodermal activity) while participants imagined a mate's infidelity. The specific innate modular theory of gender differences in jealousy hypothesizes that men are upset by sexual infidelity and women are upset by emotional infidelity, because of having faced different adaptive challenges (cuckoldry and l...
متن کاملCan manipulations of cognitive load be used to test evolutionary hypotheses?
D. DeSteno, M. Y. Bartlett, J. Braverman, and P. Salovey proposed that if sex-differentiated responses to infidelity are evolved, then they should be automatic, and therefore cognitive load should not attenuate them. DeSteno et al. found smaller sex differences in response to sexual versus emotional infidelity among participants under cognitive load, an effect interpreted as evidence against th...
متن کاملSex differences in jealousy: evolutionary mechanism or artifact of measurement?
Two studies are presented that challenge the evidentiary basis for the existence of evolved sex differences in jealousy. In opposition to the evolutionary view, Study I demonstrated that a sex difference in jealousy resulting from sexual versus emotional infidelity is observed only when judgments are recorded using a forced-choice response format. On all other measures, no sex differences were ...
متن کاملSex differences in jealousy: Information search and cognitive preoccupation
Two experiments test the prediction derived from the evolutionary view of jealousy that men are particularly concerned with a mate s sexual infidelity and women with a mate s emotional infidelity. Experiment 1 examines sex differences with respect to the information men and women actively request from their partner when suspecting her or his infidelity. Experiment 2 tests the hypothesis that wi...
